Files

Every page can have its own files, such as images, documents or downloads. Files that are used across the whole site, such as a logo or favicons, belong to Global Data and Files instead. Both places offer the same tools for uploading and managing files.

Uploading Files

To upload files, open the Files tab of a page or of Global Data and Files. Then drop the files onto the area labeled Drop files here or click to browse, or click it to select files from your computer. Files with a size of up to 512 MB can be uploaded.

By default, Automad accepts common archive, audio, image, video and document formats, for example jpg, png, svg, webp, mp3, mp4, pdf and zip. Other file types are rejected as Unsupported file type.

Importing Files From a URL

Files that are already available online can be imported directly. Click Import, enter the URL of the file and confirm. Automad then downloads the file and attaches it to the page.

Managing Files

Each file is displayed as a card. The menu of a card offers the following actions:

ActionDescription
Edit imageOpens the image editor. This action is only available for images.
Edit file infoLets you rename the file and, for images, edit the caption.
Copy URL to clipboardCopies the URL of the file.
DownloadOpens the file in a new browser tab.

When you rename a file, Automad updates the links to it on all pages automatically. Image captions are displayed in gallery and slideshow blocks, as described in Images.

Moving and Deleting Files

To work with several files at once, select them using the checkbox on each card. The following actions apply to all selected files:

  • Move selection moves the files to another page or to Global Data and Files. Links to the moved files are updated automatically.
  • Delete selection deletes the files after a confirmation.

Editing Images

The image editor lets you make basic changes to an image without leaving the dashboard. You can crop, rotate and flip an image, fine-tune brightness and colors, apply filters, add annotations and watermarks, and resize it.

When you save your changes, you can enter a file name and choose a format. Saving under the original name replaces the image, while a new name creates an additional file.
