Public MCP

The public tools of the MCP server work without any authentication. They give AI agents and MCP clients read-only access to the published content of your site — for example to answer questions about your documentation or to summarize your latest blog posts.

Setup

As long as the MCP server is enabled, the public tools are available and no further setup is required on the server side. To connect a client, simply add the endpoint URL without any authentication header. Using Claude Code, for example, a site can be added as follows:

claude mcp add --transport http mysite https://yoursite.com/mcp

Other MCP clients that support remote servers using the Streamable HTTP transport can be configured in the same way.

Visible Content

Public tools only see what is also publicly accessible on your site:

  • Only the published version of a page is visible. Unpublished changes as well as pages that have never been published are not included.
  • Private pages and all of their subpages are excluded.
  • Hidden pages are included, since they are publicly accessible as well, even though they don't show up in navigations and page lists.

When reading a page, a client receives its block content, all of its page settings and the names of the attached files. Note that this also includes values of fields that are not rendered by the template of a page.

Available Tools

The following tools are available without authentication. All of them are read-only.

ToolDescription
page_readReads a single page by its URL, either as structured data including all blocks or as plain text.
page_searchSearches pages by one or more keywords and returns up to 50 results, optionally limited to a section of the site.

page_treeReturns the hierarchical structure of the site or a part of it.
tag_listLists all tags that are used across pages.

In order to also access drafts and private pages or to manage content, a client has to authenticate using an access token. Learn more about the private MCP.
