AI Assistant

Automad offers AI assistance for content editing within the block editor. The assistant helps you generate, rewrite and improve content without leaving the dashboard. This feature is optional and can be fully disabled. To use AI writing assistance, you must connect at least one supported AI provider.

Automad currently supports integrations with OpenAI and Claude APIs.

Setup

AI assistance is configured in the AI Assistance section of the System Settings in the dashboard. In case no provider is configured yet, the setup wizard that is shown after installing or updating Automad also includes a step for connecting a provider.

Connecting a Provider

The supported providers require you to create an account on their platform. After signing up, you can generate a dedicated API key for use in Automad and set up billing for the API usage. Then follow these steps in the dashboard:

  1. Click Configure provider on the card of the provider you want to use.
  2. Enter your API key and click Validate and save. The key is validated with the provider before it is saved.
  3. Select the AI model that should be used for writing assistance. The list of available models is loaded directly from the provider.

You can configure both providers at the same time and choose between them in the editor. The API key and the model of a provider can be changed at any time. Use Remove configuration in order to delete a provider configuration together with its API key.

System Instructions

Custom system instructions are automatically appended to every prompt. They allow you to define guidelines for tone, style and formatting, helping maintain consistency throughout your content — for example "Use a professional, concise, and friendly writing style."

Disabling AI Assistance

AI assistance can be turned off entirely at any time using the AI Assistance toggle in the same section of the System Settings. When disabled, the assistant can't be used in the editor anymore and no requests are sent to any provider. The setting is saved as AM_AI_ASSISTANCE_ENABLED in the configuration file.

Usage

Once a provider is configured, you can access the assistant through the AI Assistance prompt box in the bottom right corner. The prompt box appears as soon as you click into a block editor and is also available when using in-page editing. On small screens, the assistant is hidden.

Writing Prompts

The assistant offers a single prompt field, where you describe in your own words what should be done — for example writing a new section, correcting spelling, rephrasing a paragraph in a different tone or translating content into another language. In case multiple providers are configured, select the one that should be used in the dropdown menu of the prompt box.

  • Press Shift + Enter or click the submit button in order to send a prompt.
  • Click the stop button or press Escape in order to cancel a running request.
  • Use the settings icon to quickly jump to the AI configuration in the System Settings.

Context and Selection

The page content automatically serves as context for your prompts. That includes the blocks of all block fields that you are currently editing. Other page data, like the title or the page settings, is not sent. To replace content with AI-generated output, select the text or multiple blocks you want to modify. The prompt box always shows the current selection.

Content Handling

  • If nothing is selected, the generated content is inserted as new blocks after the block you last worked on.
  • When one or more blocks are selected, they are replaced entirely with the generated output.
  • When text is selected within a block, only the selected text is replaced. In that case, the output is inserted as plain text without any formatting.

AI-assisted writing works best with text-based blocks. Other content, such as layout sections or images, provides context but will be replaced by generated text when selected during a prompt. The assistant generates HTML content that is converted into blocks such as paragraphs and headings.
