Automad integrates with AI in two independent ways. The AI Assistant helps you write and transform content directly inside the block editor using the APIs of OpenAI or Claude. The MCP server allows external AI agents and MCP clients to read your site's content and, when authenticated, to manage it on your behalf.
What Is Available
Both features are optional and can be disabled independently in the System Settings of the dashboard. The following table gives an overview of what each feature does and what is active by default.
| Feature | Description | Default |
|---|---|---|
| AI Assistant | Writes, rewrites and translates content inside the block editor. | Enabled, but only usable after an AI provider has been configured with your own API key. |
| Public MCP | Read-only access to the published content of your site without authentication. | Enabled |
| Private MCP | Full access for creating, editing and publishing pages using an access token. | Only available after an access token has been created. |
In This Guide
The following chapters cover the setup and usage of the AI Assistant and the MCP server, explain how to work safely with AI agents and describe how your data is handled.
AI Assistant
Automad offers AI assistance for content editing within the block editor. The assistant helps you generate, rewrite and improve content without leaving the dashboard. This feature is optional and can be fully disabled. To use AI writing assistance, you must connect at least one supported AI provider.
MCP Server
Automad includes a built-in MCP server that allows AI agents and other MCP-compatible clients to read and manage pages and content on your site over the Model Context Protocol. Instead of copying content back and forth between your site and an AI chat, a connected agent can search and read your pages, draft new ones or update existing content — while all edits are saved as drafts for you to review.
Privacy & Data
Automad does not use your data for training AI models or any other external processing. All AI features are optional and data is only sent to external services in case you use them. When using external AI services, the respective providers' terms of service and data policies apply.
