Variables are the content of your templates. The actual value of a variable depends on the current context, which in most cases is the currently requested page. In case a variable is not defined in the data of a page, the value of the shared data is used as a fallback. Besides content that is defined in the dashboard, Automad also provides variables that are generated during runtime as well as access to parameters of the URL's query string and the session data.

Reserved Variables

Some variables have reserved names and are always available. They are managed by dedicated fields in the page or shared settings of the dashboard and are therefore not listed together with the fields of a template. Reserved variables can be used in templates like any other variable.

Runtime Variables

Runtime variables are defined by Automad during rendering. They are read-only and can't be edited in the dashboard. The names of runtime variables always start with a colon:

Filters let you modify the value of a variable in place before it is rendered. A pipe | passes the value of a variable as input to a filter. Multiple filters can be chained, so that the output of one filter is used as the input for the next one. Besides filters, basic mathematical operations can be used in the same way.

Sets shared, session or runtime variables by passing key/value pairs as option array.
